Yoga FAQs


What Is Yoga?

The word yoga, from the Sanskrit word yuj means to yoke or bind and is often interpreted as “union” or a method of discipline. A male who practices yoga is called a yogi, a female practitioner, a yogini.


What Does Om Mean?

Om is a mantra, or vibration, that is traditionally chanted at the beginning and/or end of yoga sessions. Many people believe it to be the sound of the universe. Chanting Om allows us to recognize our experience as a reflection of how the whole universe moves and breathes.  As we chant Om, it takes us for a ride on this universal movement, through our breath, our awareness, and our physical energy.  Through the sound of Om, we begin to sense a deeper connection with all that surrounds us.  


How Many Times Per Week Should I Practice?

While everyone is different and can commit to varying numbers of days per week, even if you only practice for one hour a week, you will experience the many benefits of the practice. Ideally, a person would practice two to three times a week for at least an hour each time.  Bear in mind, that some time is always better than no time in practice.  So, if you can’t do an hour at a time, do as much as you can make time for.  Don’t let time constraints or unrealistic goals be an obstacle - do what you can and don’t worry about it. You will likely find that after a while your desire to practice increases organically and you will find yourself doing more and more.


How Is Yoga Different From Stretching or Other Kinds of Fitness?

Yoga is a combination of physical postures and a connection to our energetic body through mindful awareness and movement.  This sets it apart from having simply a practice of stretching.  The Asana (postures) practice is just one aspect of yoga and the connection of the mind, body, and breath helps us to direct our attention inward. Through this process of inward attention, we learn to recognize our habitual thought patterns without labeling them, judging them, or trying to change them. We become more aware of our experiences from moment to moment. The awareness that we cultivate is what makes yoga a practice, rather than a task or a goal to be completed. Your body will most likely become much more flexible by doing yoga, and so will your mind.


Is Yoga a Religion?

Yoga is NOT a religion. Rather, it is a philosophy that began in India an estimated 5,000 years ago.  Although Yoga sometimes interweaves other philosophies such as Hinduism or Buddhism, it is not necessary to study these paths in order to practice or study yoga.  It is not necessary to surrender your own religious beliefs to practice yoga.

I’m Not Flexible - Can I Do Yoga?

Yes! You will be relieved to know that Yoga has ZERO to do with your ability to touch your toes!!  Yes, really!!  Many people think that they need to be flexible to begin yoga, but that’s like expecting yourself to know how to ski before you take skiing lessons. Not necessary!  If you are curious about Yoga, it is likely that your body is sending you the signal that NOW is the time to dive in.  So, dive on in!!  The water is great!


What Do I Need to Bring to Class?

All you really need to begin practicing yoga is your physical body, your mind, your willingness to TRY, and some sense of humor - - - we LOVE to laugh here!!  It would also be helpful to wear comfortable clothes that move with you and make you feel good.  You will either be barefoot or can wear socks and you can bring a towel to class with you if you wish. As your practice grows and blossoms, you might decide to buy your own yoga mat but we do have mats and all required props available for you.

Massage FAQs

This is YOUR session. Speak up!

Why is this so important? If you want anything changed: pressure, areas worked, position or if you are too hot or too cold ... speak up!
You will not hurt the therapist's feelings by asking for something that will make you more comfortable. Your therapist wants this to be the best experience for you to relax and enjoy.

Also, what you requested in one session may be different in another. If you had a full body massage last time you had a session, but this time you only want your back/neck/shoulders/arms worked, it's perfectly fine to ask.

You will enjoy your sessions so much more!

What should I expect during my first massage therapy visit?

Your massage therapist will require you to fill out a health history form. Afterward the therapist will begin by asking you general questions to establish what areas you would like worked on, if there are any conditions needing to be addressed, and to determine if massage is appropriate for you. Your massage therapist may perform certain assessments and testing to evaluate your condition and to see if you have any presenting complaints.

It is important to list all health concerns and medications so the therapist can adapt the session to your specific needs without doing any harm. It is also important to list any allergies so the therapist is aware if he/she needs to use a different oil or lotion during the session.

Do I have to be completely undressed?

You should undress to the level you are comfortable. For a full body massage, most get completely undressed. However, if you will be more comfortable during the session if you leave your underwear on, that's fine. 

Your massage therapist will give you privacy to undress and get comfortable on the table.  All private parts will be completely covered during the session.


How often should I get a massage?

That varies from person to person. If you are just looking for some occasional relaxation, then a session every 3-6 weeks may be fine for you.

However, if you are looking to address a specific condition, then it is recommended to go more frequently at first and then slowly taper down to a maintenance schedule. Sometimes more frequent 30-minute sessions can be effective until your goals are met and a maintenance schedule is in place. 

Frequency of sessions should be discussed with your massage therapist after your treatment when he/she has a better hands-on understanding of your particular muscular issues.

Reiki FAQS

Where does Reiki energy come from? 

Reiki energy is said to come from a higher power; God energy, universe energy, or source energy which exists in a higher dimension than our physical world. In this way, Reiki energy comes through the practitioner from the crown of their head, into their body and out their hands. 

Is Reiki a Religion?

No!  Reiki is a very spiritual practice by nature but is not associated with any one religious practice or belief structure.  Neither clients nor practitioners are asked to change any religious or spiritual beliefs they may have. They are free to continue believing anything they choose and are encouraged to make their own decisions concerning the nature of their religious practices.

How is a Reiki treatment given? 

In standard treatments, Reiki energy flows from the practitioners hands into the client. The client is usually lying on a massage table but can also be done while the client is seated or standing. The client remains fully clothed and the practitioner places her/his hands on or near the clients body in a series of hand positions. The whole treatment usually lasts one hour.

What does a Reiki treatment feel like?

What an individual person experiences during a Reiki treatment varies somewhat from person to person.  It is generally reported that there are feelings of deep relaxation, felt by all.  Reiki energy encourages one to let go of all tension, anxiety, fear or other negative feelings.  As a result, a feeling of peace and well-being is experienced.  Some drift off to sleep and at the end of the treatment, one generally feels more balanced and centered.

What can be treated with Reiki?

Reiki has a positive effect on all forms of illness and negative conditions. This includes minor things like head/stomach aches, colds, flu, tension/anxiety, as well as serious illness like heart disease, cancer, leukemia, etc. The side effects of regular medical treatments may also be reduced or eliminated. This includes the negative effects of chemotherapy, post-operative pain and depression as well as improving the healing rate and reducing the time needed to stay in the hospital.
